Suffrage Centennials won first prize as nonprofit blog!

SuffrageCentennials.com was showered with attention by New Mexico Press Women at the organization’s annual conference and awards banquet on April 25, 2015 with a first-place award as a non-profit blog. Judges said that the perspectives expressed on Suffrage Centennials represent a “great introduction” to the subject of the women’s suffrage movement and the upcoming centennial celebrations, as well as being “a great topic” in its own right. NMPW is New Mexico’s largest inclusive media organization.

The year, 2020, is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Prepare now for the celebration.

1915 suffrage centennial poster reprint available through National Women’s History Project!

The National Women’s History Project (nwhp.org) has just published a reprint of the 1915 suffrage election poster which brings to light the intense Votes for Women campaigns in four states that year: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. The poster is 11 x 17 inches and of considerable visual and historic interest. The poster has been reproduced with permission from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. See the gift shop section of the National Women’s History Project to order. Poster reprints are $25 in this limited edition. When you visit the gift shop of the NWHP, you’ll find many gift items that are unique to the NWHP and treasures in their own right. Bring a smile to the suff buffs in your family and among your friends. The year 2015 is a centennial year, and there are other suffrage centennial events and observances to come. New York State celebrates its 1915 suffrage victory in 2017, and of course there’s the national suffrage centennial in 2020.

Full steam ahead for New York’s 2017 women’s suffrage centennial!

New York State is getting ready for its 2017 suffrage centennial on Vimeo.

Visualizing a suffrage centennial celebration is the first step in actualizing it. And it’s not merely an imaginative process. New York City is actively engaged in doing its part. There’s an exhibit at New York City’s Municipal Archives through June 2015; a call from the New York State Museum for artifacts to be on display at the 2017 exhibit, “Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial”; and a celebration of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 200th birthday on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Great Hall at Cooper Union with an artistic interpretation of the 1848 Declaration of Sentiments. This is just the beginning. Buckle your seat belts. There’s more to come. Plan events and celebrations. Support the creation of a funded state centennial commission. Do you remember back in December 2014 when we announced our wish for a funded New York State 2017 suffrage centennial planning commission? Wish List Link.

The commission is one step closer to creation in the New York State Legislature. But the help of New York’s voters is needed to make it a reality. Advocates of such a funded planning commission are busy lining up their representatives and asking them to sign onto the bill as sponsors. And the appropriations part of the legislation won’t be a walk in the park. It will require monitoring the bill’s progress and making your views known, that is, if you live in New York State.

The bill sponsored by Democratic Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and Republican State Senator Betty Little will, if passed by both chambers, create a thirteen-person commission consisting of appointees to coordinate the state’s commemorations. The commission could be funded by $2 million in state funds.

VIDEO: For the past two years people on the ground have appealed to Santa and Mrs. Claus for their help in getting the U.S. Congress to reauthorize the “Votes for Women” trail, also known as the National Women’s Rights History Project Act, legislation faithfully sponsored and supported by U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter.

There’s movement in the hallowed chambers in Washington, DC where this proposed legislation has been stalled. Added to the bill’s support are four cosponsors who include Katko, R-Camillus, and U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, an Albany-area Democrat. U.S. Reps. Richard Hanna and Tom Reed, both Republicans, support the measure. Some supporters cite the potential impact of economic development and cultural heritage tourism on the region, also known as the “Cradle” of the women’s rights movement in the United States. Our wishes for 2015 at the start of the year included a national suffragist memorial outside of Washington, DC and a statue of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton in New York City’s Central Park. These two wishes are linked to the 2020 suffrage centennial, and it isn’t a slam dunk. 2020 suffrage centennial is goal for campaign to put a woman on a U.S. $20 bill

The campaign to boot Andrew Jackson from the $20 bill and replace him with a woman has been gathering support nationally, including a grassroots voting campaign. It’s a way to bring the 2020 suffrage centennial out in the open by setting the year 2020 as a goal. Have you voted and declared your pick from a slate of 15 candidates? Do so. More women candidates are being added to the list. According to the web site, this is a process:

“The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote. So it seems fitting to commemorate that milestone by voting to elevate women to a place that is today reserved exclusively for the men who shaped American history. That place is on our paper money. And that new portrait can become a symbol of greater changes to come.

“Let’s make the names of female ‘disrupters’ — the ones who led the way and dared to think differently — as well-known as their male counterparts. In the process, maybe it will get a little easier to see the way to full political, social and economic equality for women. And hopefully it won’t take another century to realize the motto inscribed on our money: E pluribus unum, or “Out of many, one.”

Joan of Arc: Important suffrage movement icon now has her own museum

A large Joan of Arc Museum in Rouen, France spread over five levels with ten exhibition spaces is due to open in March 2015. Her fifteenth century trial is one focus, as well as the considerable controversies that have arisen over Joan throughout the centuries. The annual attendance is expected to be between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors.

Joan of Arc represents many things to many people, including the suffrage movement in England and the United States. Joan’s association with the suffrage movement comes close to home. This association is laid out in vivid detail in an excellent article by Kathleen Kelly, a performer and writer who has made Joan of Arc her life’s work. We’ll be hearing more about Inez Milholland, the U.S. suffrage martyr.

VIDEO ABOUT SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL OBSERVANCE of Inez Milholland’s death in 2016.When Milholland led suffrage parades in Washington, DC and New York City, she evoked the Joan of Arc association.

Noted Kelly: “When New York suffragist Inez Milholland, for example, led the women’s March for the Vote in Washington, DC in March 1913, clad all in white and astride a white horse, she didn’t overtly claim to be impersonating Joan of Arc. The electrifying figure she presented was called ‘the Herald’ or simply ‘the Woman on a Horse,’ an evocation of women in the West who already had the vote or a nod to the moral purity of American temperance leaders who frequently dressed in white. But everyone knew who she really was.”

February 15th is Susan B. Anthony’s 195th birthday. The Susan B. Anthony Day on February 15th is observed in New York, California, Florida, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Visit Anthony’s home in Rochester, New York. Or go there vicariously online. Either way you can have a blast at Susan B. Anthony’s 195th birthday party. Lynn Sheer is the keynote speaker at the annual birthday fundraiser for the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House at 17 Madison in Rochester, New York in an event that attracts hundreds of people, some years as many as 700 or more.

Our scout, Kenneth C. Clark, has been on the Susan B. Anthony trail where he photographed the outside of the Ontario County Courthouse in Canandaigua, NY, the location of Susan B. Anthony’s 1873 trial for illegal voting. Travelers on their way to Rochester often find the detour to the courthouse worth their time. VIDEO about Susan’s trial and the courthouse. January birthdays of women’s rights activists and other suffrage movement celebrations

If you have a favorite suffrage activist, there’s more than a remote possibility of something in that person’s life that can be celebrated, a suffrage centennial or otherwise, in January and during the upcoming year. Don’t rely on the standard observances. Create your own! The “go to” web site for the birthdays of activists and prominent women is found at the National Women’s History Project. The NWHP is celebrating its 35th year in operation in 2015. This organization has carved innumerable paths into the wilderness of American history. If you’re not subscribed to the NWHP’s mailing list, indulge yourself. And join as a member. Each month there’s an email about women’s rights activists and their birthdays. Whether you’re a teacher, student, or simply a women’s history or suffrage history fan, get on the bandwagon.

Long-awaited book with six-figure advance about English suffragette, Princess Sophia, published by Bloomsbury!

The UK is far ahead of the United States in terms of showering attention on the suffrage movement. And with a new book, Sophia, published by Bloomsbury and written by Anita Anand, 2015 will be a noteworthy year as far as reinforcing the UK’s trailblazing performance. Controversial suffrage activist Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, the subject of the Sophia biography, not only had American suffrage movement associations, but her connections to the English royalty made her stand out among her contemporaries.

The 2012 centennial observance of the death of English women’s suffrage martyr Emily Davison set a pace of public awareness of the suffrage movement that hasn’t stopped since 2012. And the much-anticipated fall 2015 release of the UK feature film “Suffragette” only adds to the buzz. The “Suffragette” feature film is directed by Saran Gavron, written by Abi Morgan. It has an exciting cast including Meryl Streep who plays English suffrage matriarch and activist Emmeline Pankhurst.

The Bloombury advance publicity describes the story this way: “In 1876 Sophia Duleep Singh was born into royalty. Her father, Maharajah Duleep Singh, was heir to the Kingdom of the Sikhs, a realm that stretched from the lush Kashmir Valley to the craggy foothills of the Khyber Pass and included the mighty cities of Lahore and Peshawar. It was a territory irresistible to the British, who plundered everything, including the fabled Koh-I-Noor diamond.

“Exiled to England, the dispossessed Maharajah transformed his estate at Elveden in Suffolk into a Moghul palace, its grounds stocked with leopards, monkeys and exotic birds. Sophia, god-daughter of Queen Victoria, was raised a genteel aristocratic Englishwoman: presented at court, afforded grace-and-favour lodgings at Hampton Court Palace and photographed wearing the latest fashions for the society pages. But when, in secret defiance of the British government, she travelled to India, she returned a revolutionary.” For more.

Bloomsbury acquired the book in 2012 and paid a well-publicized six-figure advance to Anita Anand, a well-known British broadcast journalist. It’s expected that the book will elicit considerable interest in the UK, the US, Australia, and India.

New release date of September 2015 for “Suffragette” film from the UK as Meryl Streep gives interviews!

Fall 2015 release date announced for “Suffragette” film from the UK on Vimeo.

Though it had initially been scheduled for release in January 2015, the production team for “Suffragette” (the film from the UK), has revised its expected release to September 2015, according to Pathe, the film’s publicists. Meryl Streep’s recent interviews will prepare the public for the production that is predicted to make a splash during 2015. Streep plays Emmeline Pankhurst in the film that’s directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan. Streep told reporters that she is “shocked” about how the suffrage movement is neglected by the mainstream media. And she pointed out how in its day the suffrage movement was so threatening that the English authorities responded to movement activists as if they were terrorists.

“Girls, we’ve been waiting for this,” Streep told USA Today. She made the analogy between 1910 in England to today by noting that the Brits developed surveillance techniques to spy on the suffragettes, as many called themselves in England. “Suffragette” is the first film to be shot in the Houses of Parliament in London. By playing the part of suffrage activist Emmeline Pankhurst, Meryl Streep is expected to bring this remarkable period of votes for women history to the attention of the mainstream public in the time leading up to the 2017 suffrage centennial in New York State, as well as the U.S. 2020 suffrage centennial.

The “Suffragette” film is expected to be a boost for those who are promoting suffrage-related projects and programs. “Suffragette” is on a IMDb list of films that are serious contenders to be nominated for “Best Picture” in 2015. Whatever accolades the production receives, the spinoff effects are likely to be profoundly felt by those attempting to bring attention to the suffrage movement in the United States.

The ties between activists in both countries were strong and included key activists from both nations. Individuals such as Lucy Burns, Alice Paul, Harriot Stanton Blatch, Elisabeth Freeman and others were trained in the English suffrage movement, an experience that influenced tactics and strategies on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
