We’re off to women’s suffrage centennial events at Susan B. Anthony house in Rochester, New York

This year, 2017, is the centennial observance of New York State’s women voting for 100 years. As the “Cradle” of the women’s rights movement in the United States, New York has plenty to offer. Head north from New York City (where there’s a lot going on) and then stake out a journey to the Finger Lakes where there’s something for everyone in the family. Four states have suffrage centennial observances planned before the national suffrage centennial in 2020: New York, Michigan, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. Local organizations are linking their action and community agendas to suffrage centennial celebrations. A centennial comes only once a year, so why not take advantage of it?

This year’s program at the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester on February 15, 2017 features Ann Dexter Gordon, the leading authority on Susan B. Anthony, editor of the Papers of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, and research professor in the Department of History at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Advance planning is recommended so that when August 26th in 2017 comes around, you are prepared. August 26th is Women’s Equality Day when we recognize the national observance of the passage and ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. What are you planning? A fundraiser, lecture, exhibit, reception, community project? Susan B. Anthony spent 50 years of her life working for women’s voting rights. A hush comes over the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester, NY when groups, visitors, and tourists open the front door and walk through the building to learn about how the past, present and future come together.

CHAPTER 471: AN ACT to create a temporary New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission, and providing for its powers and duties; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof became a law November 20, 2015, with the approval of the Governor. Passed by a majority vote, three-fifths being present. The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows: Section 1. Legislative findings. The legislature hereby finds and declares there is a need to create a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission to promote the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, which will take place between the years 2017 and 2020. The primary focus of the New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission will be to plan and execute an organized series of statewide programs that celebrate the accomplishment of women’s suffrage and the central role of New Yorkers and New York State in this milestone, while also helping shape the future to ensure a more just and equitable society for all. The legislature finds that the creation of a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission is necessary to bring together persons qualified by experience and/or by powers vested in them by their offices to coordinate and facilitate such a multi-year event…

Four states have yet to celebrate their state suffrage centennials before 2020, the national suffrage centennial in 2020. Follow the progress on SuffrageCentennials.com

Join the National Women’s History Project’s new initiative— the establishment of a new Women’s History Alliance, which will help link women’s history advocates at the local, state, and federal level and significantly expand each group’s circle of influence. 

Open to individuals and organizations, this new effort will help connect educators, performers, keepers of historic sites, agencies, and organizations in their work recognizing women’s history and preparing for the woman suffrage centennial in 2020.

Building on the success of Women’s History Month, the primary goal of the new Alliance is to work toward having Women’s Equality Day—August 26th, the anniversary of American women winning the right to vote—declared a federal holiday. There is no federal holiday recognizing women. Male figures are celebrated from President’s Day to Christmas. The great achievement of the 20th century—the emancipation and empowerment of women—calls for recognition at the national level.

Suffragist Vigil 2017

The Women’s March is scheduled for January 21, 2017 in Washington, DC. Find out about the details.

A vigil directly inspired by the U.S. women’s suffrage movement is scheduled for late January, from Sunday, January 29, 2017 through Saturday, February 4, 2017, EST at the United States Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White House in Washington, DC.

In the tradition of the suffrage movement, the Suffragist Vigil will be a week of a silent sentinels to highlight the ERA (he Equal Rights Amendment) and other burning issues. Participants will be stationed at the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the White House. Spread the word that you follow SuffrageCentennials.com

This video highlights past suffrage centennials. We’re on to other events and celebrations. New York State has a funded suffrage commission preparing for 2017, the state’s celebration of 100 years of the state’s women voting. Canada has suffrage centennial events in 2016. Tennessee has a new statue that has been unveiled.

Breaking NewsNew York State women elected to public office who are preparing for 2017 haven’t been shy about commenting on the inappropriate remarks by Republican Party presidential nominee Donald Trump released recently. Many of them have been involved in the lobbying effort to create and fund a state suffrage centennial commission, including many legislators signing on to the bill passed last year in Albany, NY.

One suffrage centennial supporter, NYS Republican State Senator Betty Little, had this to say about Trump’s public comments on News10: “As a member of the Senate Republican conference, I have been very proud of our work to advance issues important to women. I was honored to sponsor the law creating the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission to celebrate women gaining the right to vote in New York State in 1917. Certainly I am very disappointed in Trump’s statements on that tape. These are his words, his actions and his responsibility to address them. It is up to voters to make their own conclusions and decisions.”

“Seneca Falls” and “Suffrage” aren’t household words yet, but they may be soon enough!

With the announcement of Hillary Clinton as the first woman to be a major party’s presidential candidate, there was loud cheering for the connection between the issues of the present day and the past. And especially loud cheering for the activists of the women’s suffrage movement. The word “suffrage” is coming into its own. It still has a long way to go in terms of mass recognition, but things have changed. Not long ago, mention of the word “suffrage” was guaranteed to make people’s eyes glaze over. That’s changing. About time! And the references to Seneca Falls, New York has brought that 1848 event located in upstate New York to the attention of millions of Americans. Keep the conversation ongoing. The year 2020 is the national centennial observance of women voting in the United States.
