Genesee Country Village & Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road, Mumford, will host a women’s suffrage centennial luncheon at 11 a.m. Sept. 23. Sally Roesch Wagner will present “The Rest of the Story of the Suffrage Movement,” a dialogue about the issues of equality raised by the country’s suffrage foremothers. The luncheon will feature rebel soup and salmagundi served with suffrage salad dressing, from suffragette cookbooks published from 1886-1920 to raise money for the cause. The museum will offer activities that highlight equality efforts made by women during the 19th century.Cost is $40-$45 and includes admission to the museum. Suffrage centennial events + new women’s center at New York Historical Society!

The “Spirit of 1776” suffrage wagon is now at the New York State Museum in Albany—in the lobby to promote the November 4, 2017 opening of the museum’s women’s and suffrage history. New York women have been voting for the past 100 years. The wagon was on exhibit in 2010 in the museum lobby. This video highlighting the 2010 exhibit gives an idea of the tender loving care showered on the wagon by museum staff.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Humanities New York! has been playing a pivotal role in making sure that the 2017 state suffrage centennial is successful. The draft budget in Washington, DC calls for the elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities, a major source of funding for HNY. New York State is the second largest source of funding for HNY. A call to action has been issued with an online form designed to make your job easier when expressing support. Humanities New York! is responsible for some terrific work, funding, and advocacy for our growing constituency.

The new center for women’s history at the New York Historical Society is the first of its kind in the nation within the walls of a major museum. It features the stories of American women and is a hub for scholarship and education. Guided by a committee of historians and informed by research, the women’s center features permanent installations, temporary exhibitions, talks, and special programs.

The NYS League of Women Voters has released a suffrage resource kit promoting the organization’s upcoming anniversaries as well as ways to get involved in the 2017 state centennial observance.

“Adirondack Suffragists: 100 Years of Votes for Women” is an exhibit opening May 27 and running through October 9, 2017 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of New York State passing a women’s suffrage act into state law. New York women, including Inez Milholland from Essex County, played important roles in the movement. The Adirondack History Center Museum and the Essex County Historical Society in Elizabethtown, NY has scheduled the suffrage exhibit for the Anitra Pell Gallery. This event is sponsored in part by Humanities New York. For more information about the exhibit.

SUFFRAGE RALLY REENACTMENT TO COMMEMORATE NYS WOMAN SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL

The Glens Falls Area Suffrage Centennial Committee presents a suffrage rally reenactment to commemorate the 2017 state suffrage centennial to be performed in Glens Falls, NY on Sunday, May 7, 2017 from 1-3 p,m. at the gazebo in City Park. This event is free and open to the public. The rally will reenact the history of the campaign for women’s voting rights through historical speeches, letters, and songs. Featured will be national figures such as Susan B. Anthony, Inez Milholland, and Carrie Chapman Catt, all of which had local ties. Those opposed to women voting are part of the program. Glens Falls Art will be on hand to demonstrate period photography, and tintypes will be available, weather permitting.

In 1917, New York State became the twelfth, and only eastern state to grant full voting rights to women. The Glens Falls Area Suffrage Centennial Committee consists of the Crandall Public Library, Chapman Historical Museum, Warren County Historical Society, as well as individuals and institutions interested in women’s history. The rain location will be the Christine L. VOTES FOR WOMEN TRAVELING PANEL EXHIBITION

The New York State Museum has created a six-panel traveling exhibition based on the larger Votes for Women exhibition that opens November 4, 2017 at the state museum in Albany, NY. The State of New York launched the 100th anniversary of women voting in the state on March 1, 2017 with a women’s history exhibit up for public view for thirty days. Now the “Spirit of 1776” wagon has been moved over to the New York State Museum where it is promoting the large women’s suffrage exhibit at the museum in November 2017. That exhibit will be on view through May 2018.

IN OTHER NEWS: The 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial has a Facebook page. The Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative (WVCI) is a collaborative effort created to share information and stimulate activities around the country in the years leading up to 2020. It is run by a volunteer task force, that represents the various segments of the historical women’s suffrage movement, contemporary women’s organizations, and scholars. For more information.

Planning for the 2020 national suffrage centennial is underway thanks to a volunteer task force that has been considering a logo for the celebration, among other ongoing plans. While there are many events and observances that qualify for suffrage centennial recognition, the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial initiative is taking the lead by collecting information about events and celebrations planned for the nation’s suffrage centennial observance. There are stirrings in Washington State, Rhode Island, New York State, and other parts of the nation. Regular reports are being circulated in a listserv distributed among interested individuals and organizations.

CHAPTER 471: AN ACT to create a temporary New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission, and providing for its powers and duties; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof became a law November 20, 2015, with the approval of the Governor. Passed by a majority vote, three-fifths being present. The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows: Section 1. Legislative findings. The legislature hereby finds and declares there is a need to create a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission to promote the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, which will take place between the years 2017 and 2020. The primary focus of the New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission will be to plan and execute an organized series of statewide programs that celebrate the accomplishment of women’s suffrage and the central role of New Yorkers and New York State in this milestone, while also helping shape the future to ensure a more just and equitable society for all. The legislature finds that the creation of a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission is necessary to bring together persons qualified by experience and/or by powers vested in them by their offices to coordinate and facilitate such a multi-year event…

Inez Milholland is a focus as New York State hits the ground running for its 2017 suffrage centennial!

New York State is celebrating its 2017 suffrage centennial! on Vimeo.

A New Yorker has taken center stage as New York State hits the ground running in 2017 for its year-long suffrage centennial. Canada had its national suffrage centennial in 2016. Another year-long campaign is still ongoing to support President Obama in awarding a presidential citizens medal to Inez Milholland (1886-1916) before he leaves office.

New York State residents have been speaking up. Recent media of note includes:

There is increased support for the Inez citizens medal as 2017 opens the door for New York State to celebrate its suffrage centennial. New York State women won the right to vote in 1917. When they did, the large numbers of new voters from New York tipped the balance in the direction of women voting nationwide. However, it took considerable focus and determination to achieve the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It took several generations of women numbering in the tens of thousands.

A medal for Inez goes beyond honoring honoring her as an individual. She was a catalyst and one of many who devoted their lives to win this essential human and civil right. A citizens medal for Inez will bring awareness to the long hard struggle. Support President Obama in awarding a presidential medal before he leaves office. A medal will be exhibited and travel around the nation for exhibition. A medal will symbolize the connection between the past, present, and future. A medal is long overdue.

The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association supports the citizens medal as well as the importance of shedding light on the broad coalition of American women it took to win voting rights at the turn of the 20th century. It is an inspiring story. The Inez Milholland Centennial work is a special campaign of the National Women’s History Project. Martha Wheelock, filmmaker, has made tremendous leaps spreading Inez Milholland’s story by way of a 15-minute documentary on Inez, her life and times.
