Happy New Year from SuffrageCentennials.com! Resistance to ERA eroding…

From time to time we remind our support base about the importance of standing on the shoulders of those who have come before us. Most were volunteers who gave what they could within a toxic and obstacle-ridden context. They passed the torch to us, and now we’re passing the torch to others to carry on the work. Happy New Year!

The Equal Rights Coalition is in this nonviolent struggle for the long haul. Those of us at SuffrageCentennials.com are partners in the Equal Rights Amendment Coalition that consists of many organizations across the United States. Here’s one of their terrific messages for distribution.

SuffrageCentennials.com has been publishing since 2013.

Holiday wishes from SuffrageCentennials.com!

Buy an ERA t-shirt like this one. It expresses one of many choices of protest memorabilia available on the ERA Coalition web site. US women have been working on an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution for 100 years in 2023. The ERA Coalition is restless. The message on the t-shirt now available for sale reflects this.

We are partners in the ERA Coalition. Have you followed the posts on eracoalition.org?  We are passing the torch to the future. The next generation carrying on the work of getting an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution will, no doubt, make discoveries like we have. Like it, or not? There are certain patterns that persist.

Will an ERA t-shirt overcome the message sent by the US Supreme Court that women aren’t smart enough to make decisions about their own bodies, and they must be controlled by a government-related court reminding them that we, the women, are second class citizens? Stay tuned!

An Ending to SuffrageCentennials.com? No way! Watch video…AND WE SENT ERA LETTER #6.

We’re limping along and are buoyed by expressions of appreciation that our efforts are noted and welcome.  This is the passing of a torch to another phase of the suffrage centennial movement. In 2023 women in the United States have been on the case and working to see passage of an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution.

The inspiration and acceptance of this rite of passage is documented in a video about standing on the shoulders of those who have come before us and the importance of passing a torch to those who carry on the work. This video tells the story:

An Unfinished Revolution-Passing the torch of women’s rights activism from Marguerite Kearns on Vimeo.

We have volunteered our hopes and dreams to the limit and now we’re taking a much-needed rest.. There are many important issues facing us and Planet Earth.

WE SENT LETTER #6 TO US SENATOR CHUCK SCHUMER—DID YOU CALL HIS OFFICE OR REACH OUT?

The ERA Coalition is pleased at the Congressional guarantees for same sex and interracial marriages. This reinforces the urgency of expressing support for Congress to remove the time limits on the equal rights amendment to the US Constitutions. Keep those support messages ongoing to Chuck Schumer. We just sent Letter #6.

Find out what you can do to get the US Senate to a vote on getting rid of the ERA ratification time limits. We have mailed Letter #6 to mover and shaker Chuck Schumer, Hart Senate Building, Room 322. Washington, DC 20510.

Next year (2023) is the 100th year of US women working on an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution. That’s why SuffrageCentennials.com is involved.

We are partners in the ERA Coalition with its almost 300 partners also joining in with the effort. Need a speaker at your next organizational meeting? Of those out there… is Zoe Nicholson. She’s available to speak.

GOP IS WARMING ON THE ISSUE OF THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT

Resistance is eroding to an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution, according to an article issued by the Brennan Center for Justice, as well as contributors to a town hall presentation by the ERA Coalition in the aftermath of the November 2022 US elections. There are still legal hurdles to overcome, however. And 2023 remains as the 100th. anniversary of US women working in support of an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution.

Support an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution–wear a t-shirt and carry an ERA bag!

Almost 100 years ago suffrage activist Alice Paul prepared the language for an equal rights to the US Constitution. She spent the rest of her life working on this.  This effort is not forgotten. In early December of 2022, ERA  Coalition rep Zakiya Thomas circulated the above message. We’ve been sending letters to the US Congress. Now the plan is for us all to wear ERA t-shirts. Go the the ERA Coalition and order a t-shirt.

At present, there is a mysterious effort underway to pass legislation to remove the time limit on ratification that could be voted on.

We are sending letters to ask for this. Will it happen? We monitor the ERA Coalition regularly for news of an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution.

ERA Coalition rep  Zakiya Thomas says we are “close” to making an equal rights amendment a “reality.” If this is true, buy and wear an ERA t-shirt. Carry an ERA bag. Make sure your elected rep in Washington, DC is aware of your support. If it’s merely a matter of purchasing ERA memorabilia, buy bags and t-shirts for everyone you know.

It appears as if the rationale behind buying t-shirts and bags is to “move the masses.” So start holding your breath because we are “close” to making an ERA a “reality.”

In 2023, US women will have been working for an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution for 100 years.

Remember to buy and wear an ERA t-shirt. And carry an ERA bag.

Hummus for breakfast with a cup of tea! Thinking about an ERA for the US Constitution!

by Marguerite Kearns

I made a big serving of hummus this morning for breakfast with pita bread and hot tea. I looked over the refrigerator contents and the cans of organic chickpeas screamed at me from the kitchen shelf. Have us for breakfast…they said. I took down my blender and cranked up the hot water for tea.

Cleaning up after myself is the most difficult part of eyeballing the ingredients to make hummus for breakfast.  The blender isn’t the easiest to clean, but it a necessary part of the process—

Chickpeas, cooked. Tahini. Olive oil. Lemon. A dash of hot sauce. A whiff of garlic. Sake vinegar. Soy sauce. Whatever.

This goes down easy, but that’s not true with the news this morning that the US Congress is so divided that it’s unlikely to get much passed from now to the 2024 presidential election.

So I need vitamins, hummus, and plenty of caffein over the next two years.

Who cares if women have been working for 100 years with the goal of an equal rights. amendment to the US Constitution!  We care, and our job is to keep the issue alive.

This is our goal and the reason we persist.

Our Time has Come, but there’s still time to get the ERA voted on…LETTER #4 TO THE US SENATE!

This web site, SuffrageCentennials.com, owes a great deal to the volunteers who for a decade from 2010 to 2020 had a vision. We were going to celebrate 100 years of US women voting by continuing our postings and spending the time and effort to do what we could to contribute to the effort of getting an equal rights amendment included in the US Constitution.

So we are working, and reaching out to others on Planet Earth who are also facing obstacles.

ACTION LETTER #4 TO GET THE US SENATE OFF ITS DUFF

Find out what you can do to get the US Senate to a vote on getting rid of the ERA ratification time limits. Below is Letter #1 to mover and shaker Chuck Schumer, Hart Senate Building, Room 322. Washington, DC 20510.

OUR SUCCESSES AND LIMITATIONS IN BRINGING WOMEN TOGETHER

We were successful in part. The worldwide pandemic limited the activities, but there were many centennial accomplishments in 2020 in spite of the lockdowns and different issues popping up in many quarters. We completed our goals of a celebration. Then the atmosphere shifted with court decisions and new priorities. The handwriting is on the wall. We are leaning in the direction of 2023 with the 100th anniversary of US women working for an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution.

Our vision has prevailed. And now new generations are carrying the torch. The world is in a turmoil and some citizens believe we are headed into a downturn as far as women are concerned. Others have different points of view. We’re urging others to keep an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution alive and center in our hopes and dreams.

AN ENDING TO THE VOLUNTEER EFFORTS AFTER CLOSE TO A DECADE?

As of the end of 2022 approaches, Suffrage Wagon News Channel will continue publishing. The Spirit of 1776 suffrage campaign wagon will move forward as part of the permanent collection of the New York State Museum. Thanks to the many friends of supporters of SuffrageCentennials.com

WHERE WE ARE IN THE CONTINUING ERA LEGAL STRUGGLE

This is a summary, above.

WE HAVE JOINED THE ERA COALITION

Part of our work consists of keeping issues alive. The suffrage activist Alice Paul devoted her life to winning the right to vote of American women, as well as an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution. She wrote the first version of the ERA in 1923. The year, 2023, is the 100th anniversary of US women working for an equal rights amendment to the US Constitution.

Make sure you are voting. We are now members of the ERA Coalition. See graphics of welcoming from a recent ERA Coalition newsletter highlighting ERA partners.

Video about suffrage activist Alice Paul shines light on her ERA role…LETTER #2

Americans of all shapes and backgrounds will be honoring the work of Alice Paul in 2023 when our eyes shift to the upcoming centennial campaign suffrage centennial campaign in 1923. It’s the date associated with the 2023 date of US women working on an amendment to the US Constitution for 100 years.  We have an active ERA coalition in place to make 2023 the target for an ERA passage. And there is an Alice Paul Institute in New Jersey.

You will be hearing a lot about the 100 year anniversary during 2023. Is the US going to ignore this very important suffrage centennial? Or make it a “top priority?”

NOT A LOT IS KNOWN  ABOUT MILITANT SUFFRAGE ACTIVIST ALICE PAUL

She was a hard worker and perhaps Alice Paul is one of the most educated women of her generation. Why is it that few known much about her? This is one of the programs Marguerite Kearns presents. Contact Marguerite to recruit her to present to your group on zoom. See the phone number at the end of this post. Find out the real story about why it’s important for US women to have an equal rights amendment in the US Constitution. It will protect the rights of everyone facing prejudice and discrimination on account of sex.
