BOOKS IN THE AFTERMATH OF AUGUST 26TH—

A flurry of publications was released during 2020, the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution. Lynn Coffin in Outreach  in the NEARO summer 2021 issue had this to say about An Unfinished Revolution, published by SUNY Press and written by Marguerite Kearns.

AN ELEGANT BOOK CELEBRATING THE SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL

The 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative and the National Women’s History Alliance worked with publisher St. James’s House in London to distribute A Vote for Women, a work that highlights the “grand scale and broad diversity of the suffrage movement.” I have a copy. The book is also included in the 2021 catalog of items distributed by the NWHA. It perfect as your own gift of remembering the important work underway.

During the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment in 2020, a wide range of activities occurred around the country. How effective were these commemorations in raising public awareness of women’s fight for equality? How has the centennial impacted the telling of suffrage history and women and minority history more generally? What’s the relationship between education and activism? How well did it succeed in telling the stories of the women before us and in creating momentum for the work still to be done?

Colleen Shogan leads a discussion with panelists Karen Hill, Executive Director, Harriett Tubman House; Page Harrington, author of Interpreting the Legacy of Women’s Suffrage at Museums and Historic Sites; Rebecca Roberts, co-author of The Suffragist Playlist: Your Guide to Changing the World; and Shannon Browning-Mullis, Executive Director of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace.

We’re also building support for August 26th becoming nationally recognized as Women’s Equality Day. The National Women’s History Alliance and Partners are working hard on this. We’re participating too.

Chef Ted Cutting has gone on the record to spread our voting rights messages. Activism builds steam over the generations. And one generation builds on the accomplishments and challenges of others.

We’re in support of August 26th becoming a federal holiday. Why? Because there are no national observances honoring women. Will this be challenging? You bet. Small actions add to the necessary support over time. One way to spread the word is the making Chinese fortune cookies with custom women’s rights messages inside. SuffrageWagon.org has up-to-date information about patriotic protest, another way of viewing the Spirit of ’76 suffrage campaign wagon that is in the collection of the New York State Museum in Albany, NY. The wagon is taking a much-needed rest from the exposure to light. It has been on exhibit since 2017 at the state museum.

Celebrating August 26th, Women’s Equality Day, has taken on an extra challenge in 2021. We’re gathering support to make August 26th a national celebration. And the degree of recognition has a great deal to do with you.

The National Women’s History Alliance is working on this, as well as individuals and organizations across the nation. We’ll be posting information as it becomes available.

July is the month that Edna Kearns took off in her Spirit of ’76 suffrage campaign wagon in 1913. It’s also a month when we’re celebrating the free reading at Bookworks, an independent book store in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 28, 2021 at 6 p.m. Mountain Time. And the special program from KUNM, “Women’s Focus,” on July 24, 1-2 p.m. with commentator Carol Boss.

ALSO: The Spirit of 1776 suffrage wagon has taken a rest from exhibition at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY. It has been on exhibition since 2017. Constant exposure to light isn’t good for the fragile wagon used in NYC and on Long Island by state suffragists during 1913.

WE’RE PASSING THE TORCH IN JULY

Passing the torch is the theme of the free zoom reading on July 28, 2021 at 6 p.m. Mountain Time. Passing the torch of freedom was important in the past. I didn’t elaborate much about my own activism in my book published this year by SUNY Press (State University of New York). I figured that the book itself stood as an example of a long-term example of passing the torch.

THE TORCH OF EQUALITY HAS BEEN PASSED BY PREVIOUS GENERATIONS, AND IT’S LIKELY IT WILL BE PASSED AGAIN

In addition, I didn’t feature the more than ten years blogging about my grandmother’s suffrage campaign wagon. It will hopefully be placed on permanent exhibition at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY after the museum’s renovation is complete. Check out: SuffrageWagon.org

The effort to bring to the attention of the nation the early women’s rights movement included an application for a historic marker in Long Beach, New York for Edna Kearns and much more. The historic marker was unveiled in Long Beach, New York in early June on the boardwalk.

We’re into 2021 when the book about my grandparents and the early women’s rights movement is out there and available. The book is perfect for history instruction. Join the fun and action.

SUFFRAGE CENTENNIAL WRAPUP

Our suffrage centennial wrapup also includes the efforts underway to make August 26th (Women’s Equality Day) a national holiday. There are no federal observances dealing with women. We also address recent efforts to suppress the voting rights of US citizens. After the long and agonizing struggle to win the right to vote by US citizens in general, this is a distressing piece of news.

During 2020, the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial was opened. And the first statue celebrating US women voting rights activism was unveiled in Central Park in New York City by Monumental Women.

This is Bess (above), Grandmother Edna Kearns”s best friend who is the opposite of Edna in how she thinks, but they remain friends anyway. They’ve been close since they lived next door to each other in the Germantown section of Philadelphia before the “big blowup.” That’s what my mother called the sad incident that caused Edna’s family, the Buckmans, to move to Echo Dale. It’s all in the book, An Unfinished Revolution: Edna Buckman Kearns and the Struggle for Women’s Rights, by Marguerite Kearns and released by SUNY Press (State University of New York) this summer of 2021.
