VOTING VIDEO: Suffrage descendants spread the word about ancestors!

Women’s Suffrage Centennial events & celebrations: News Notes on Vimeo.

Inez Milholland’s family members, some distant, kept her memory alive throughout the 20th century when the early women’s rights history was marginalized, considered boring and unimportant, and it was either invisible or referred to in a single photo caption.

It’s hard to keep up now with the amount of material published about the early women’s rights movement. This includes descendants of the activists. In July 2020 a conference, “Seneca Falls Revisited” featured the great great grand niece of Harriet Tubman. One extended family group had a representative—the great-great-great grandson of Frederick Douglass.

BOOKS BY FAMILY MEMBERS ARE MOVING THROUGH THE PUBLISHING PIPELINES

There are increasing occasions when someone speaks in public or writes about their ancestor or family member. John Holliday from Australia is one example. He had planned to visit the United States to promote his book about his suffrage ancestor, but the pandemic called a halt to his plans.

SuffrageCentennials.com has been publishing since 2013.

If you know of an ancestor publishing a book about their suffrage activist family members or ancestors, get in touch! Plan for your book club—especially a book about an early women’s rights activist written by a descendant.

“An Unfinished Revolution” Edna Buckman Kearns and the Struggle for Women’s Rights” by Marguerite Kearns is one example.

The dream of historic markers to celebrate the 2020 suffrage centennial is coming closer to a reality. October 1, 2020 is the deadline to apply for a free historic marker in your community. The National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites has been working hard the past few years to establish a Votes for Women Trail across the United States. The historic markers are funded by the Pomeroy Foundation in NYS.

NORMAN ROCKWELL MUSEUM PRESENTS
ROSE O’NEILL: ARTIST AND SUFFRAGETTE

Special exhibition celebrates the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial, on view through September 27

Rose O’Neill: Artist & Suffragette is a special installation created with recently acquired artwork, generously donated by The Rose O’Neill Foundation to Norman Rockwell Museum’s permanent collection of illustration art. This exhibition is especially meaningful as August 18, 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. Rose O’Neill (1874-1944) was strongly devoted to the cause, taking part in protests, public speaking, creating protest signs, magazine illustrations, and postcards advocating for women.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and raised in rural Nebraska, self-taught illustrator O’Neill broke new ground for women in the worlds of art and publishing.

The Historical Society of Woodstock (NY) will sponsor an exhibit about Edna Kearns and Elisabeth Freeman, early women’s rights activists, during September 2020. Watch for updates here on SuffrageCentennials.com

19th Amendment Cocktail—a great non-alcoholic toast from our food and drink columnist! PLUS other centennial updates!

When the special glasses are set out on the table, and a toast to the early women’s rights movement is proposed—try this special recipe from our writer, Franco Salzillo, who prepared this drink to toast the 19th Amendment. Here’s his recommendation for a memorable toast to August 26th, Women’s Equality Day. Ed.

Let’s Have A Toast For Women’s Rights!

This year, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution that guaranteed and protected women’s right to vote. This is quite a milestone, and a worthy occasion to have a toast.

The American social reformer and activist Susan B. Anthony once said, “There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.” We’ve made some progress when it comes to equality, but not without a struggle.

There’s still a long road ahead, and both women and men must come together every day to fight for what’s right. Here’s a gorgeous drink recipe to toast for women’s rights, because I can’t think of a better reason to raise our glasses.

Include a lovely Berry Baby Bellini, a berry-scented and fizzy alcohol-free cocktail reminiscent of summer on your “to do list.” This is a colorful drink is both fun and memorable, the perfect concoction for our very special toast.

Berry Baby Bellini Recipe Serves 5, time 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup assorted berries: blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, or similar
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 bottle of sparkling apple cider, alcohol-free
  • 5 flute stemmed glasses or tall glasses

Directions

  1. Add half the berries and sugar into a small bowl or container. Combine with a spoon and muddle until you get a smooth puree.
  2. Add two teaspoons of berry puree to each glass and fill halfway with sparkling apple cider. Stir gently.
  3. Add a few whole berries to each glass, top with cider, and serve.

VIDEOS: Plus, Suffrage Centennials goes beyond 2020!

Sojourner Truth is honored during this centennial year, especially with the unveiling of a statue honoring the early women’s rights movement scheduled for Central Park in New York City.

Some incredible programming is coming with August 26th in mind this year. Last night, for example, the cast of “The Suffragist” hosted a conversation about the delay of the production due to the pandemic closures. A song honoring Inez Milholland, the US suffrage martyr, was fabulous, and perhaps it stood out even more due to the digital format.

We won’t be closing up shop after 2020 is over. Because of the public health emergency, many voting rights centennial celebrations were delayed or cancelled altogether. Keep SuffrageCentennials.com on your list to check over the next year.

And in 2023, US women will have been working on an Equal Rights Amendment to add to its Constitution for 100 years.
