The big birthday bash and other Suffrage Centennial news notes!

Centennial News Notes

People are gearing up to celebrate the big one, the 2020 national suffrage centennial when American women will have been voting for 100 years. New York City will celebrate Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 200th birthday on Thursday, November 12, 2015 with an artistic interpretation of the Declaration of Sentiments by feminists, activists, and artists at the Historic Great Hall at Cooper Union in New York City. More details to be announced.

The National Park Service will mark the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2016, and the National Historic Preservation Act will have been in effect for 50 years. These two landmark moments come just two years after the National Museum of American History quietly marked its own 50th anniversary in 2014. A Working Group at the National Council on Public History 2015 Annual Meeting in Nashville will serve as a collaborative forum for planning a scholarly symposium to mark these important events. The symposium will take place in March 2016 during the NCPH Annual Meeting in Baltimore.

IN OTHER NEWS: The year 2016 is the centennial observance of the death of U.S. women’s suffrage martyr Inez Milholland. Canada will hold suffrage centennial observances in 2016. And if a woman candidate runs for the U.S. presidency, the story of how women won the vote will the focus of considerable interest. The film from the U.K., “Suffragette,” will be distributed internationally in October 2015. And the film, “10 Days in a Madhouse,” is anticipated to be released in late September 2015. This film is based on the investigative reporting of Nellie Bly that resulted in dramatic reforms in public mental institutions.

A legislative proposal is circulating in New York State to officially name a planning commission for the state’s upcoming 2017 suffrage centennial. Whether or not there’s an appropriation from the state legislature remains an open question. And 2015 is the centennial observance of four states that put the issue of women’s suffrage to the voters in 1915: New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. While these initiatives failed, the women’s suffrage movement gained considerable support that contributed to later victories.

Fundraising continues for projects such as the proposed Stanton/Anthony statue in New York City’s Central Park and the national Turning Point Suffragist Memorial in Lorton, VA.

2020 suffrage centennial is goal for campaign to put a woman on a U.S. $20 bill

$20 bill

The campaign to boot Andrew Jackson from the $20 bill and replace him with a woman has been gathering support nationally, including a grassroots voting campaign. It’s a way to bring the 2020 suffrage centennial out in the open by setting the year 2020 as a goal. Have you voted and declared your pick from a slate of 15 candidates? Do so. More women candidates are being added to the list. According to the web site, this is a process:

“The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment that granted women the right to vote. So it seems fitting to commemorate that milestone by voting to elevate women to a place that is today reserved exclusively for the men who shaped American history. That place is on our paper money. And that new portrait can become a symbol of greater changes to come.

“Let’s make the names of female ‘disrupters’ — the ones who led the way and dared to think differently — as well-known as their male counterparts. In the process, maybe it will get a little easier to see the way to full political, social and economic equality for women. And hopefully it won’t take another century to realize the motto inscribed on our money: E pluribus unum, or “Out of many, one.”

A message from Dr. Helen Pankhurst to American women voters is part of the upcoming four-day festival and celebration of the Suffrage Wagon Cafe opening on March 28. The festival runs through March 31, 2015. Dr. Pankhurst is the granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst and the great granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, important leaders of the suffrage movement in England. Interest in Emmeline Pankhurst is gathering steam because of the upcoming major motion picture from the U.K., “Suffragette,” expected to be released internationally in October 2015. Meryl Streep has been cast in the role of Emmeline Pankhurst.

Audio reading from 1915 book, “How it Feels to be the Husband of a Suffragette”: Suffrage Centennial Special!

Rory Michael O’Sullivan reads from the 1915 work, “How it Feels to be the Husband of a Suffragette” by George Him, a special of SuffrageCentennials.com.

The entire book in the public domain can be found online.

Husbands of suffrage activists had a high profile in 1915, even it involved a spoof on the men of the movement. Dating back to 1848, men were involved in Votes for Women advocacy. Frederick Douglass is a prime example, although Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s husband found excuses to be out of town during the Seneca Falls convention of 1848. A total of 32 men signed the Declaration of Sentiments. Men belonged to suffrage associations and they formed their own support organizations.

The Men’s League for Woman Suffrage dates back to 1910. And the membership rolls of the National Men’s League could boast of 20,000. Some state legislators could be counted on to submit legislation on the state and federal levels. And the work of many suffrage activists involved lobbying men to vote for various legislative proposals. The National Women’s History Project has a quiz called “Men who Supported Women’s Rights.”

Suffragist memorial fundraising is launched with 2020 suffrage centennial in sight!

VIDEO: Be on the Cutting Edge with your Support of the Suffragist Memorial! on Vimeo.

The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association is pleased to report that Sue Webb has stepped forward with the first $1,000 donation in the current campaign to raise money for the suffragist memorial that’s expected to be completed and operational on or before the U.S. 2020 suffrage centennial celebration. A second $1,000 contribution by Sue Webb is on behalf of her daughter, Abbe Saunders Fabry.

While American families are planning trips to visit the monuments to George Washington or Martin Luther King, many of us scrambling to make certain that a memorial to honor those suffrage activists is supported and funded. All of us are needed to make this dream a reality!

The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association’s campaign, “A ‘Grand’ Thank You…Memorialize the Suffragists,” hopes to raise the $1 million dollars needed to begin Phase 1 of the voting rights memorial. The cost of the memorial’s completion will be close to $7 million. The garden-style national memorial will be located near the former Occoquan Workhouse in Lorton, Va., where in 1917, dozens of suffragists were imprisoned. They endured beatings, force-feedings and dreadful conditions for “obstructing the sidewalk” as they stood silently in protest at the gates of the White House. The memorial design has been donated by Robert E. Beach Architects. The land and future memorial maintenance will be in the hands of NOVA Parks, the regional park authority.

If 1,000 people each donate $1,000, the current goal of $1 million, one phase of the total fundraising, will be realized by the fall of 2015. Volunteers interested in stepping forward to help raising this money are encouraged to send an email to: admin@suffragistmemorial.org.

Our thanks to Gerri Gribi for permission to use part of her original music for the video soundtrack supporting the suffragist memorial. Check out Gerri’s web page of other musical offerings from women’s history at creativefolk.com

“Suffragette” film special photo, plus Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s 200th birthday bash!

VIDEO: Big birthday bash planned for the 200th birthday of Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 2015 on Vimeo.

It’s International Women’s Day, and for this special occasion the stars of the “Suffragette” film from the UK took advantage of the occasion to release a photo with them posing with suffrage descendants Helen Pankhurst and Laura Pankhurst, the great and great-great granddaughters respectively of Emmeline Pankhurst. Meryl Streep will play Mrs. Pankhurst in this major motion picture due for release in September 2015.

The UK may be head and shoulders ahead of the United States in terms of public awareness about the suffrage movement. But on the American shores the momentum is picking up. This is clear in the plans underway to celebrate the 200th birthday of Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 2015. Although all the details have yet to be announced, there’s plenty already in the public domain. The Elizabeth Cady Stanton Hometown Association in Johnstown, NY, for example, has a busy schedule of special events during 2015. And the Women’s Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls, NY has rolled out the red carpet during March 2015, Women’s History Month. All of these events and celebrations are laying a rich and textured base for upcoming suffrage centennials on the local and state levels during the time leading up to the 2020 suffrage centennial.

Alice Paul Institute is 30 years old: Celebrate during Women’s History Month

VIDEO: Alice Paul Institute is having a birthday bash! on Vimeo.

Alice Paul Institute is celebrating its 30th year on March 19, 2015 by presenting the annual Alice Paul Equality Awards to its “Founding Mothers,” the organization’s eleven original board members. The birth of what’s now known as the Alice Paul Institute dates back to a small group of South Jersey NOW- Alice Paul Chapter members who were inspired by the Equal Rights Amendment. Their first task was to raise funds to purchase Alice Paul’s papers at auction, followed by the group’s incorporation as the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation. Then came the daunting task of raising the funds to purchase and save Paulsdale, Alice Paul’s childhood home. All of this happened and now after 30 years, the Alice Paul Institute is an established suffrage history-friendly organization with its tenacles in local, state, national and international issues and projects. The Alice Paul Equality Awards event will be held from 6-9 p.m. on March 19th at the Westin Mount Laurel, 555 Fellowship Road, Mount Laurel, NJ.

IN OTHER NEWS: March 28, 2015 is the grand opening of Suffrage Wagon Cafe.

New York’s gearing up for its 2017 suffrage centennial in 2015! Celebrate Women’s History Month!

VIDEO: 2015 is New York State’s suffrage centennial year! on Vimeo.

The stirrings in New York State to plan for the celebration of its 2017 suffrage centennial coincides with a recognition that 100 years ago the state was alive and cooking with organizing on the state level. The 1915 Votes for Women referendum didn’t result in a state victory for New York, but the groundwork was laid for 1917 when New York became a suffrage state. In 1915 three other states conducted spirited referendum campaigns: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. More to come on the 1915 referendum campaigns.

The New York State Council for the Humanities will hold a grants and programs workshop on March 11, 2015, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at VENUE Cultural Education Center (First floor Members Lounge) to discuss program and grants opportunities for the 2017 state suffrage centennial. The event is cosponsored by the Greater Hudson Heritage Network and the New York State Archives. On March 9, 2015 the New York Council on the Humanities will have a presence on Lobbying Day at the NYS Legislature with a “Suffrage Soapbox” with speeches by W.E.B. DuBois, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, and Leonora O’Reilly. Volunteers are being solicited to play these parts.

The City of New York has staff in place that has initiated 2017 suffrage centennial planning. There’s a project underway to establish a statue in Central Park honoring Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. And the New York State Cultural Heritage Tourism Network is working on a web platform to promote the 2017 suffrage celebration. NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo mentioned the state’s rich suffrage history in his 2015 inaugural speech.
