Inez Milholland suffrage centennial campaign raises her national profile!

Get ready for Women’s History Month! on Vimeo.

Today, the name Inez Milholland is familiar to more Americans than ever before.  It has appeared on buttons, signs, tee shirts, sashes, exhibits, marquees and more this past year. The increased public awareness is due at least in part to the yearlong Inez Milholland Centennial campaign that began in late 2015 under the auspices of the National Women’s History Project.

The campaign set out to raise the profile of Inez, a prominent New York suffragist and attorney who became a symbol of the work and sacrifice that went into winning Votes for Women 100 years ago.  Inez was only thirty when she died in Los Angeles after a grueling 1916 speaking tour for equal suffrage.  Her death of exhaustion and pernicious anemia saddened, angered and inspired women throughout the country.  Her fellow suffragists started picketing the White House on January 10, 1917, just weeks after her memorial in the U.S. Capitol.

In addition to their educational work, Centennial project co-chairs Marguerite Kearns and Robert P.J. Cooney Jr. set in motion the nomination of Inez for a Presidential Citizens Medal.  Their online petition drew over 1,000 signatures supporting her nomination.

“Although President Obama didn’t recognize Inez – or anyone else – with a Presidential Citizens Medal in 2016,” Kearns noted, “we succeeded in bringing the past, present, and future together.  Inez’s memory is alive again.” Kearns is a writer specializing in women’s history and the granddaughter of suffrage activist Edna Kearns, whose suffrage campaign wagon, the “Spirit of 1776,” will be on exhibit at the New York State Museum during 2017 (SuffrageWagon.org).

“Our work continues to honor Inez and all American suffragists so they can take their rightful place in history,” said Cooney, author of “Remembering Inez,” a tribute to the suffrage martyr, and “Winning the Vote,” a suffrage history. “We are heartened by the warm reception and high-profile publicity Inez received.”

The Centennial project’s goal was substantially enhanced by filmmaker Martha Wheelock, who created a 15-minute film, “Forward Into Light,” on Inez.  Martha has already distributed the DVD free to thousands of individuals, community organizations, policymakers and educators (InezMilholland.org).

The Centennial web site (InezMilhollandCentennial.com) will continue to offer information, news and resources as we approach 2020, the nation’s suffrage centennial. New York is celebrating its suffrage centennial in 2017 since women in that state won the vote in 1917 after a hard fought, wartime campaign. As a New Yorker who campaigned for Votes for Women for many years, Inez will draw additional attention to the heroic drive for American women’s voting rights.

The National Women’s History Project (nwhp.org) is a 501(c)3 organization that has been educating the public for more than 35 years about the importance of including women in American history. Recognizing Inez’s role leading the first inaugural women’s march in the nation’s capitol, the NWHP became a sponsor of the Women’s March on Washington in 2017. The NWHP has launched the Women’s History Alliance (nwhp.org/the-womens-history-alliance/) to bring together the increasing number of supporters interested in specific programs that honor multicultural women in the United States.

S2388-A  LITTLE  Same as A 1019-A  Gunther   Chapter 471  of 2015
LAWS OF NEW YORK, 2015

CHAPTER 471: AN ACT to create a temporary New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission, and providing for its powers and duties; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof became a law November 20, 2015, with the approval of the Governor. Passed by a majority vote, three-fifths being present. The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows: Section 1. Legislative findings. The legislature hereby finds and declares there is a need to create a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission to promote the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, which will take place between the years 2017 and 2020. The primary focus of the New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission will be to plan and execute an organized series of statewide programs that celebrate the accomplishment of women’s suffrage and the central role of New Yorkers and New York State in this milestone, while also helping shape the future to ensure a more just and equitable society for all. The legislature finds that the creation of a New York state women’s suffrage 100th anniversary commemoration commission is necessary to bring together persons qualified by experience and/or by powers vested in them by their offices to coordinate and facilitate such a multi-year event…

Suggestions for celebrations and special programs at Suffrage Centennials! on Vimeo.

The 2017 women’s march in Washington, DC, across the nation and around the world was thrilling. It seemed like we were speaking to a deep dark hole in 2015 when we celebrated the 95th observance of the 19th Amendment. Now, 2020 is next when American women will have been voting for 100 years. Upcoming: Women’s History Month in March 2017; Convention Days in Seneca Falls, NY in July, and we’re challenging you now to start planning for August 26th. Start with your organization or community event. Don’t forget that in 2016 another women’s history national monument was added to the National Park Service—the Belmont-Paul National Monument in Washington, DC.

The remainder of this weekend is to process and let sink in the impact of the 2017 march on Washington. Millions of people participated online and the impact will be magnified. Onward!

Four more states on the bandwagon for women’s suffrage centennials!

Four more states get on the women’s suffrage centennial bandwagon! on Vimeo.

Four states have yet to celebrate their state suffrage centennials before 2020, the national suffrage centennial in 2020. Follow the progress on SuffrageCentennials.com

Join the National Women’s History Project’s new initiative— the establishment of a new Women’s History Alliance, which will help link women’s history advocates at the local, state, and federal level and significantly expand each group’s circle of influence.

Open to individuals and organizations, this new effort will help connect educators, performers, keepers of historic sites, agencies, and organizations in their work recognizing women’s history and preparing for the woman suffrage centennial in 2020.

Building on the success of Women’s History Month, the primary goal of the new Alliance is to work toward having Women’s Equality Day—August 26th, the anniversary of American women winning the right to vote—declared a federal holiday. There is no federal holiday recognizing women. Male figures are celebrated from President’s Day to Christmas. The great achievement of the 20th century—the emancipation and empowerment of women—calls for recognition at the national level.

Centennial celebrations thru 2020 engage folks worldwide! on Vimeo.

The Lake George Historical Association Museum has set aside a small exhibition room in the LGHA Museum, 290 Canada Street, Lake George, NY to interpret suffrage activity in the Town of Caldwell (later Lake George and Village of Lake George) from the early 19th century through 1920. This year, 2017, marks the NY State suffrage centennial. Susan B. Anthony visited Lake George on several occasions to press for the cause for women suffrage. Katrina Trask, George Foster Peabody, Mary Loines and Mary Jacobi were among the Lake George/Bolton residents who persisted in keeping the issues alive. The pro and anti suffrage constituencies will be addressed. The LGHA has received a grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) to kick off a 2107 exhibition with a theatrical performance portraying suffragists in Warren (Lake George) and Essex (Ticonderoga) Counties. LGHA collaborated with North Country Community College and the Ticonderoga Womens Studies Program to develop a dramatic script about the life of Essex resident Inez Milholland for the musical theater department at Lake George High School that was performed in 2016. Turning Point Suffragist Memorial supports citizens medal for Inez Milholland!

Support the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial before the 2020 suffrage centennial on Vimeo.

The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial supports the awarding of a presidential citizens medal to Inez Milholland from President Obama before he leaves office. Inez Milholland (1886-1916) died for our voting rights. She also led the first inaugural women’s march in the nation’s capitol in 1913. If you aren’t familiar with her story, visit the InezMilhollandCentennial.com web site and find out about the 2016 centennial campaign sponsored by the National Women’s History Project and co-chaired by Marguerite Kearns and Robert P.J. Cooney Jr.

This year, 2017, is New York State’s suffrage centennial. The state effort promotes and educates events and celebrations throughout the year. Plans are already underway for the 2020 national centennial when American women will have been voting for 100 years.

New zealand suffrage centennial medalThis is New Zealand’s suffrage centennial medal. New Zealand was the first nation in the world where women won the right to vote. By no means was it a slam dunk. New Zealand has had a Suffrage Centennial Medal in place since 1993. The national medal was intended to “recognize those New Zealand and Commonwealth citizens who had made a significant to women’s rights or women’s issues within New Zealand.” The medal has been awarded to 546 men and women.

The New Zealand suffrage medal is circular and bronze with an antique finish. The ribbon is purple with three narrow stripes of white, yellow and white in the center. When worn, the medal can be suspended by the ribbon shaped into a bow. The medal was manufactured by the Royal Australian Mint. For more information, follow this link.

The United States has no similar recognition for the largest social and political nonviolent revolution in U.S. history. This is why the nomination for a citizens medal for Inez Milholland is significant. U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier of California nominated Milholland for the honor in 2015.

Inez Milholland is a focus as New York State hits the ground running for its 2017 suffrage centennial!

New York State is celebrating its 2017 suffrage centennial! on Vimeo.

A New Yorker has taken center stage as New York State hits the ground running in 2017 for its year-long suffrage centennial. Canada had its national suffrage centennial in 2016. Another year-long campaign is still ongoing to support President Obama in awarding a presidential citizens medal to Inez Milholland (1886-1916) before he leaves office.

New York State residents have been speaking up. Recent media of note includes:

(1.) WAMC coverage by reporter Allison Dunne about the citizens medal nomination and the New York State angle. Link to “Petition Supports NY Suffragist for Presidential Citizens Medal.

(2.) An opinion piece by John Tepper Marlin, family relative of Milholland. Link to “A Suffrage Warrior.”

(3.) Point of view by author Sandra Weber stressing Milholland’s inspiration for us today. Link to Inez Milholland. There’s “There’s inspiration in Inez Milholland.”

There is increased support for the Inez citizens medal as 2017 opens the door for New York State to celebrate its suffrage centennial. New York State women won the right to vote in 1917. When they did, the large numbers of new voters from New York tipped the balance in the direction of women voting nationwide. However, it took considerable focus and determination to achieve the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It took several generations of women numbering in the tens of thousands.

A medal for Inez goes beyond honoring honoring her as an individual. She was a catalyst and one of many who devoted their lives to win this essential human and civil right. A citizens medal for Inez will bring awareness to the long hard struggle. Support President Obama in awarding a presidential medal before he leaves office. A medal will be exhibited and travel around the nation for exhibition. A medal will symbolize the connection between the past, present, and future. A medal is long overdue.

The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association supports the citizens medal as well as the importance of shedding light on the broad coalition of American women it took to win voting rights at the turn of the 20th century. It is an inspiring story. The Inez Milholland Centennial work is a special campaign of the National Women’s History Project. Martha Wheelock, filmmaker, has made tremendous leaps spreading Inez Milholland’s story by way of a 15-minute documentary on Inez, her life and times. Christmas Day & Inez Milholland 100 years ago: all part of national suffrage movement history

WAMC radio about Inez MilhollandLINK to WAMC public radio feature story about Obama citizens award nomination.

On Christmas Day in 1916, 100 years ago, over one thousand women and men gathered in Washington, D C to honor a fallen young leader. They put their holiday to the side for an emotional memorial service for suffrage martyr Inez Milholland Boissevain in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. It was the first time a woman was honored there.

At the Statuary Hall memorial service on Christmas Day 1916, California suffrage activist Maude Younger presented the eulogy for Inez and declared, “Liberty cannot die. No work for liberty can be lost. It lives on in the hearts of the people, in their hopes, their aspirations, their activities. It becomes part of the life of the nation. What Inez Milholland has given to the world lives on forever.”

After refusing to cancel an intense speaking tour for the 19th Amendment in 1916, Milholland collapsed and died in Los Angeles on November 25 of exhaustion and pernicious anemia. Her shocked colleagues immediately mourned her as a martyr to the cause of justice and women. Milholland was buried near the family home in Lewis, New York. She was born in Brooklyn in 1886 and graduated from Vassar College and New York University School of Law. Milholland practiced law in New York City in addition to advocating for American women’s voting rights.

NOMINATION OF INEZ MILHOLLAND FOR PRESIDENTIAL CITIZENS MEDAL PENDING AT THE WHITE HOUSE

U.S. women have worked hard during 2015 and 2016 to win support for a Presidential Citizens Medal for Milholland, an effort that U.S. Representative Jackie Speier of California endorsed in November 2015. The Milholland petition supporting the nomination has been submitted to the White House for consideration.

For the past year, the National Women’s History Project, located in Santa Rosa, California, has sponsored the campaign to draw attention to Milholland and other suffrage activists who contributed to the enfranchisement of women. Marguerite Kearns and Robert P.J. Cooney Jr. are co-chairs of the NWHP Inez Milholland centennial campaign (InezMilhollandCentennial.com).

“A MEDAL AFFIRMS OUR RICH LEGACY…”

Molly Murphy MacGregor, executive director and co-founder of the National Women’s History Project, noted: “I have sent a holiday greeting thanking Rep. Speier for her valuable support and urging her to make recognizing Inez Milholland with a Presidential Citizens Medal a priority. A presidential medal affirms our rich legacy in the area of American history.”

Over one thousand individuals and organizations from around the nation and from other parts of the world have signed the campaign’s petition in support of the award. The campaign’s momentum accelerated after the April 2016 release of “Forward into Light,” a 15-minute documentary by filmmaker Martha Wheelock about the life and death of Inez Milholland. The DVD is available free from InezMilholland.org.
