Programs about “Votes for Women” exhibit at New York State Museum during April 2018!

Don’t wait until 2020 to celebrate women’s suffrage. There are three excellent programs scheduled during April 2018 at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY in conjunction with the excellent “Votes for Women” exhibition that opened in November 2017 as part of the state’s suffrage centennial celebration.

The Votes for Women exhibition closes in May 2018 on Mother’s Day.

(1.) Votes for Women Gallery Tour. Sunday, April 8, 2018. 2 p.m. West Gallery. NYS Museum. Free.

Join chief curator of History Jennifer Lemak and senior historian Ashley Hopkins-Benton for a tour of the NYS Museum’s Suffrage Centennial exhibition, Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial. Learn about the history of the Suffrage movement in New York State through artifacts on display and highlighted women who led this equal rights movement. This exhibition was created in partnership with the New York State Archives and New York State Library, and in cooperation with organizations and citizens from across the state.

(2.) Ann Lewis: Messaging, Media, and Motherhood: Political Strategies of the New York Suffrage Campaign. Sunday,April 15, 2018. 2 p.m. Huxley Theatre. NYS Museum.

Ann Lewis’ talk will focus on the political strategies employed by suffragists to pass both the New York State suffrage referendums in 1917 and the 19th Amendment in 1920. Suffragists employed various political strategies to convince elected officials to support suffrage planks and then convince the men of the state to vote for the measure. Following the talk, museum curators will offer a tour of the Votes for Women exhibition.

(3.) Lunch Bite Gallery Tour: “Preservation and Politics in the Suffrage Movement.” April 25, 2018. Noon. West Hall. NYS Museum. Free.

Join senior historian Ashley Hopkins-Benton for a focused tour of the NYS Museum’s suffrage centennial exhibition, “Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial.” Learn about how the suffragists used history to promote their cause and about the story of preserving women’s history sites in New York State.

Happy Spring and a “Spirit of 1776” suffrage wagon reminder!

“Spirit of 1776” suffrage wagon on exhibit until May 13, 2018 the New York State Museum on Vimeo.

You will also get to see the remarkable “Votes for Women” exhibit at the state museum. The “Spirit of 1776” wagon can be viewed in the lobby, not far from the exhibit. It’s worth a visit to Albany, New York. There is no word yet as to when it will be on display again.

Exhibit countdown at the New York State Museum in Albany, New York

Don’t say we didn’t warn you about the terrific “Votes for Women” exhibit closing at the New  York State Museum in Albany, New York. In addition to the “Spirit of 1776″wagon, there are many other treasures on view. The exhibition has a terrific catalog that is worth adding to your women’s history collection. Plan to do something special by seeing the exhibition before its closing. It is a “must see.”

107th observance of the 1911 Triangle Factory Fire in NYC!

Inez Milholland, as well as many New Yorkers in 1911, were well aware of the Triangle Factory Fire and they were involved on many levels. In January 1910, Inez was arrested after she stopped on the street to speak to shirtwaist factory strikers. SuffrageCentennials.com has been covering the 100 years since Inez Milholland’s death and the many programs and events associated with it.

Spread the word and join the crowd on March 23rd during Women’s History Month, a month-long commemoration now in its 40th year.

On Friday, March 23, 2018, friends and interested citizens will be gathering together to remember those who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in 1911. Gather on the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street, NYC, at the site where 146 workers.mAll are welcome for the raising of the ladder, the calling of the names and the laying of the flowers.

New York University will sponsor a tour of the 9th floor of the Brown Building (where those who died in the Triangle Fire were working) prior to the annual commemoration.

News from the National Woman’s Party national monument in Washington, DC

The National Woman’s Party (NWP) Photograph Collection has a  catalog of over 5,000 prints and photographs chronicling the suffrage and equal rights movements. Ranging from 1887 to the present day, the images feature the members and political activities of the NWP; the process of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment; the formation of the World Woman’s Party and numerous other topics including the political tactics of the NWP from 1916 to 1920. These include sharply worded banners, political symbols, and colorful regalia to stage visually charged protests.

Photography agencies with a political focus, such as Harris & Ewing, took many photographs of suffrage parades, pickets, arrests, and hunger strikes.
