Canada marks its women’s suffrage centennial in 2016!

2016-canada-100th-anniversary-womens-right-to-vote-dollar-coin

Canada’s new coin to honor the 2016 centennial of woman’s suffrage is now in circulation. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Finance Bill Morneau and Patty Hajdu, minister of Status of Women unveiled the coin at a ceremony held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan granted women the right to vote in provincial elections in 1916.

A stamp has also been released to the public to mark the suffrage centennial. The stamp features the letters “O” and “T” in the black-and-gold word “Vote,” which together create the Venus symbol of femininity. It reads “Canada Women’s suffrage” in English and French, and has the dates 1916 to 2016.

100 years ago, Inez Milholland collapsed on lecture tour in the west!

INEZsignsPROMO5Breaking News

One hundred years ago today Inez Milholland collapsed on the lecture tour west. The legend goes this way— she raised the question: “Mr. President, how much longer must women wait for liberty?” The same question carries forward to today. It has taken 100 years for a woman to be a nominee for U.S. president for a national political party, although women have been candidates for other parties, including 2016 as well.

On November 25, 1916 Inez Milholland died and her vision and commitment took its part in American history. Inez is our American suffrage martyr.

“Choose It and Use It” is the message of a video reminding women to use the vote that took more than 72 years of hard campaigning to win.

IN OTHER NEWS: History Magazine has a feature article by Robert F. Cooney on Inez in the October/November 2016 issue. Click here to read the contents. The 15-minute film about Inez Milholland, available free, is still available through Martha Wheelock and Wild Women films. We’re still collecting signatures for the digital petition asking that President Obama award Inez with a presidential medal before he leaves office. Visit the Inez Milholland centennial web site for resources and updates about her.

Suffrage Centennials is a partner in the Inez Milholland centennial campaign, a project of the National Womens History Project. Marguerite Kearns is national cochair with Robert F. Cooney Jr.

American women honor suffrage martyr Inez Milholland in centennial year of her death!

Martha Wheelock

Inez Milholland film

Filmmaker Martha Wheelock (shown above) is determined to spread the word about America’s suffrage martyr Inez Milholland as she hits the road to speak to groups and respond to requests from across the nation for a free copy of the 15-minute documentary about how Inez made the ultimate sacrifice for American woman 100 years ago in 1916. Yes, you can order more than one copy of the film about Inez Milholland, “Forward into Light.” In the photo Martha is wearing a “Liberty Gage hat” that the women of the National Woman’s Party wore the weekend before leaving on their historic trip West.

Check for speakers, a film poster, and more. Consult the Inez Milholland Centennial site for information about Inez and how to sign the digital petition asking President Obama to award Inez Milholland with a presidential citizens’ award before he leaves office. The campaign is a special project of the National Women’s History Project.

One hundred years ago in early October, Inez Milholland and other suffrage activists left for the west coast for a speaking tour. Inez collapsed on the lecture platform on October 23 and died on November 25, 1916. A memorial service was held on on Christmas Day in 1916 where women from around the nation paid tribute to Inez Milholland. Since then, generations of American woman and girls have grown up unaware of Inez and the extraordinary story of her life. This is why the film by Martha Wheelock and Wild West Women is so important.

Sign the digital petition or send a letter directly to President Obama at the White House, Executive Office of the President, ATTN: Executive Clerk’s office, The White House, Washington, DC 20502.

Breaking NewsIN OTHER NEWS: Women political candidates have been wearing white in public appearances. Many people across the nation are asking if this is in recognition of the white worn by American suffrage activists at the turn of the 20th century through 1920.

The Arkansas Women’s Suffrage Centennial Project is a partnership between several museums and archives to celebrate the struggle for women’s suffrage in Arkansas. On February 8, 1917, Arkansas became the first non-suffrage state to allow women to vote in primary elections. On July 28, 1919, Arkansas became the 12th state to ratify the 19th Amendment. Exhibits (temporary and virtual), events, and education programs will run from February 2017 to August 2020. Check out their Facebook page.

The Kentucky Woman Suffrage Project is a digital project developed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment in 2020 and the history of woman suffrage in the state of Kentucky. Developed by H-Kentucky, the project features a historical timeline (1830s -1920s), an annotated bibliography, and a series of biographical sketches.  Kentucky’s suffrage sites will be included in the national Votes for Women Trail being developed by the National Collaboration of Women’s History Sites. Highlights of Suffrage Centennials: From now to 2020, go where the action is for votes for women! on Vimeo.

This video highlights past suffrage centennials. We’re on to other events and celebrations. New York State has a funded suffrage commission preparing for 2017, the state’s celebration of 100 years of the state’s women voting. Canada has suffrage centennial events in 2016. Tennessee has a new statue that has been unveiled.

Breaking NewsNew York State women elected to public office who are preparing for 2017 haven’t been shy about commenting on the inappropriate remarks by Republican Party presidential nominee Donald Trump released recently. Many of them have been involved in the lobbying effort to create and fund a state suffrage centennial commission, including many legislators signing on to the bill passed last year in Albany, NY.

One suffrage centennial supporter, NYS Republican State Senator Betty Little, had this to say about Trump’s public comments on News10: “As a member of the Senate Republican conference, I have been very proud of our work to advance issues important to women. I was honored to sponsor the law creating the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission to celebrate women gaining the right to vote in New York State in 1917. Certainly I am very disappointed in Trump’s statements on that tape. These are his words, his actions and his responsibility to address them. It is up to voters to make their own conclusions and decisions.”
